Fire was always a danger in towns built primarily of wood. Three years after the Great Fire of 1871 swept through Chicago, Naperville purchased the hand pumper housed here. During Naper Days, (Father's Day weekend each year) the pumper is pulled out and used to "put out the fire" in the Murray House outhouse.
