When Martin Mitchell Mansion opened its doors in November 2003 after a three-year, $2.8 million
renovation process, the transformation was spectacular. Listed on both the Illinois Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places, the Mansion and its Carriage House were restored in exquisite detail.
The renovations, both interior and exterior, were historically accurate and not only followed, but exceeded, the Secretary of the Interior's Guidelines for Rehabilitation and Restoration of Historic Structures, the national guidelines required for National Register structures.
The home's exterior, structural elements, mechanical and electrical needs and interior finishes were completely restored to the time period of 1890 to 1907.
Of the $2.8 million investment required to completely restore the Mansion, built in 1883 by George Martin, only 14 percent came from city funds with the balance being raised by the Naperville Heritage Society through grants and private donations.
The Mansion and Carriage House were honored in March, 2005 with the Victorian Society in America's highest preservation award.
